Legacy Leaders Published My Story

The part that matters is at the end. Not the section about the business. The last three paragraphs.

Legacy Leaders Magazine published a profile of me this month. You can read the whole thing on my site. Before you do, I want to tell you which part I would point you to if we were sitting across a table.

What is the Legacy Leaders Magazine profile of Scott Selleck about? It covers how a real estate practice gets built, why temperament matters more than skill in hiring, and why carrying cost has replaced purchase price as the deciding variable for most buyers. The passage Scott points people to is the closing section about a fifth-grade friend named Kevin Malloy.

The part that matters

It is not the section about the business. It is the last three paragraphs.

I was a resource room student with dyslexia and ADHD before either one had a name where I grew up. I was not finishing my tests. In fifth grade a friend named Kevin Malloy told me I was smarter than I gave myself credit for and asked why I did not try. I sat for a test the next day and I finished it. Everything I have been recognized for since traces back to one person deciding I was worth a sentence.

That is the award. The rest is arithmetic.

What the piece is actually about

The reporter wanted to know how a real estate practice gets built. What I told her is that I did not learn it in real estate. I learned it watching my mother run a business, starting with wigs she sold out of the basement of our house in Leonia, then a clothing consignment store in Fort Lee called Second Time Around that she opened with a partner, and finally a larger space in Palisades Park she ran on her own under her own name, Connie's Place. From Second Time Around to the day she retired was thirty-three years.

Women came in on Saturdays with wine and bread and stayed to talk. By the end it was not really a store. It was a room she made for people, and she built it at a time when women were not running businesses the way she did.

That is where the standard comes from. It is not the transaction. It is the room you make for people.

The working parts

The piece covers the things I actually spend my days on. Why I hire for temperament before skill. Why a listing is almost never a financial decision that happens to involve a house, and almost always a life decision that happens to involve money. Why carrying cost has replaced purchase price as the deciding variable, and why most people are still shopping the old way.

It covers where I think technology helps and where it does not. AI knows the map. I know the street.

And it covers what I am building next, which is the honest answer to a question I get asked a lot. Legacy, for me, is not a number. It is whether the system outlasts me.

The Standard Behind the Practice

The room my mother made for people on Saturdays is the same standard I run a practice on. In working terms it comes down to three things, and every client conversation starts with them rather than with a listing price.

Timing & Strategy

A move is a life decision that happens to involve money, so the timing question comes before the price question. Start with the assessment at quiz.sellecksellsnj.com.

Financing & Cash-Flow

Carrying cost has replaced purchase price as the deciding variable, and most people are still shopping the old way. See the advisory approach at scott.sellecksellsnj.com.

Lifestyle & Location Fit

AI knows the map. I know the street. Both matter, in that order. Explore the guides at northernnj.sellecksellsnj.com.

If you are somewhere in a decision

Selling, buying, or running the numbers on a move to Florida, the fastest way to get something useful is seven questions and about ninety seconds. It builds you a resource hub matched to where you actually are: quiz.sellecksellsnj.com

Who is Scott Selleck?

A REALTOR and Broker Sales Associate leading The Selleck Group at Keller Williams City Views Realty in Fort Lee, New Jersey, serving Bergen and Hudson County, and also licensed in Florida through Keller Williams Boca Raton Realty. Licensed since 1993, with more than 500 transactions closed.

What does Scott mean by carrying cost replacing purchase price?

For a growing share of buyers, the monthly number decides the purchase rather than the sticker price. Taxes, insurance, association fees, and assessment exposure now move affordability more than a price negotiation does, particularly in condominium and high-rise inventory. Buyers who shop on list price alone are optimizing the wrong variable.
