Edgewater's River Road Grocery Run Just Changed. Here's How It Works Now.

On River Road, the closing time is the biggest difference between the old ACME and the new ShopRite at Edgewater Commons. ShopRite of Edgewater Commons opened at 481 River Road on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2026. It is open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day of the week. None of the other big grocery stores on the corridor opens that early or closes that late.

Store Address Daily hours, late October 2026
ShopRite of Edgewater Commons 481 River Road 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Trader Joe's 715 River Road 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Whole Foods Market 820 River Road 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Mitsuwa Marketplace 595 River Road 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The hours come from each store's own website as of late October. ShopRite is the only one of the four open from 7 to 8 a.m. and from 9 to 11 p.m. That comes to three hours a day, or 21 hours a week, when the shopping run has exactly one stop.

Five Weeks Without a Supermarket at Edgewater Commons

The ACME at Edgewater Commons closed for good on Aug. 15, 2026. ShopRite opened 35 days later. In between, Patch reported the grand opening date on Sept. 12. Earlier coverage had disagreed on the date. A NJBIZ preview from Sept. 14 also printed daily hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. If that early report stuck with you, here is the correction: the grand opening announcement and ShopRite's own store page both list 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Inserra Supermarkets Inc. runs the store. It is a family-owned New Jersey company founded in 1954 by Patsy Inserra, and third- and fourth-generation family members operate its stores today. Inserra belongs to the Wakefern cooperative and runs 24 ShopRite stores in New Jersey and New York. Local officials joined the family for the ribbon-cutting, according to the company's grand opening announcement on the Wakefern newsroom. NJBIZ also ran a photo story from opening weekend.

What's Inside Now, and What Comes Later

The store is 64,000 square feet. It opened with these departments:

  • Patsy's Butcher Shop, the in-store butcher known for custom cuts
  • A Fresh Bakery Shop
  • Produce and seafood departments
  • A sushi bar
  • A full-service deli
  • Fresh to Table, with grab-and-go, ready-to-cook and ready-to-heat meals

The store you walk into this week is only the first version. The company says the building will keep being remodeled over the next year. The full plan takes two years and adds Antoinette's Kitchen with freshly prepared meals, a hot bar, a soup bar, larger produce, dairy, frozen and kosher departments, and new energy-efficient equipment.

That timeline matters once you put the hours next to the departments. A hot bar and soup bar at a store open until 11 p.m. would make it possible to pick up a prepared dinner on River Road after the other grocery stores have closed. Right now, Fresh to Table covers part of that. Antoinette's Kitchen would cover more of it once it's built. Until then, expect some aisles to look different from one visit to the next while construction continues.

How the Rest of River Road Fits Around It

From 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., the corridor works as a set of stores that each do something different.

Trader Joe's at 715 River Road keeps the same 8 to 9 schedule every day, weekends included. By street number, it sits between ShopRite and Whole Foods.

Whole Foods Market at 820 River Road has the highest street number of the four and also keeps 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Mitsuwa Marketplace at 595 River Road opens latest, at 9:30 a.m., and closes at 9 p.m. It works less like a supermarket and more like an indoor food hall attached to a Japanese grocery. Mitsuwa's New Jersey directory lists ramen from Santouka, seafood bento from Tsujita, tempura bowls from Tendon Hannosuke, rice balls from Omusubi Gonbei, and Tokyo Hanten, Oishinbo and Wateishoku Kaneda. For bakery and sweets it lists Pullman Bakery & SHIGE PAN, Kai Creamery, KAI Sweets, mochimochi KAI SWEETS, Kobe Fugetsudo, K. Minamoto and Royce'. The same directory lists Books Kinokuniya, Daiso, Little Japan USA, Michi Beauty Salon, Shiseido, a Bandai Gashapon Official Shop and a One Piece Card Game Official Shop. The directory isn't dated, so if you're going for one particular counter, check before you go.

Korean groceries are a short drive away rather than on River Road. H Mart's store finder lists no Edgewater location. Its closest stores are in Fort Lee, at 112 Linwood Drive/130 Linwood Plaza and at 1379 16th Street.

Here is how the day breaks down by time:

  1. 7 to 8 a.m.: Only ShopRite is open.
  2. 8 to 9:30 a.m.: Trader Joe's and Whole Foods open, along with ShopRite.
  3. 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.: All four stores are open, and Mitsuwa's food counters are part of the choice.
  4. 9 to 11 p.m.: Only ShopRite is open.

The Possible Next Store at 3 Main Street

The grocery lineup may not be finished. On Sept. 28, Boozy Burbs reported that Sprouts Farmers Market "appears to be moving forward with plans for a new Bergen County location at 3 Main Street in Edgewater." It also said no opening date had been announced. The next day, The Local Girl ran its own story, credited Boozy Burbs with the first report, and pointed to photos of Sprouts signage. It also said the space used to be a HomeGoods and that Sprouts had not yet listed the store on its website.

So for now, Sprouts is a report based on signage. The company hasn't announced it. Sprouts is a Phoenix-based chain that builds its stores around fresh produce and stocks organic, plant-based and gluten-free products. It has opened New Jersey stores in Aberdeen and Woodbridge in recent years. If an Edgewater store opens, it would add another natural-foods option to a corridor that already has Whole Foods. It probably wouldn't change the hours picture above unless it ends up keeping later hours than the stores already here.

Where This Leaves the Weekly Shop

These changes all came together within a few weeks of each other. The supermarket at Edgewater Commons changed operators, it now stays open until 11 p.m., and a prepared-foods buildout is now on a two-year schedule. In the same stretch, signage went up at a former HomeGoods a short distance away. Anyone who shopped River Road from memory before August is now working with an outdated map. If you shop after 9 p.m. or before 8 a.m., the corridor now has one address for you, and it's 481 River Road.

When you compare Edgewater buildings, the distance to the stores you actually use, and which end of River Road you'd be on, can matter as much as the floor plan. If you're thinking about your next move in town and want a straight answer on what's nearby, The Selleck Group can lay it out with you, building by building.
