What Are the Top 5 Florida Areas People Are Moving To With Great Healthcare?
By Scott Selleck | The Selleck Group at Keller Williams City Views Realty
Bottom line: If healthcare access drives your Florida decision, five areas stand out: Jacksonville, home of Mayo Clinic, Florida's No. 1 ranked hospital; Gainesville with UF Health Shands; Orlando with AdventHealth Orlando; Tampa Bay with Tampa General; and Sarasota with Sarasota Memorial. All five anchor hospitals rank in Florida's top five per U.S. News.

Last updated: July 2026. Market snapshot: hospital rankings cited are from the U.S. News and World Report Best Hospitals 2025-2026 edition, released July 2025, and the Forbes Top 100 Hospitals list released December 2025. Home price figures carry their own source and date inline.
One question comes up in almost every NJ to FL Transition Plan conversation I have with Bergen County and Hudson County homeowners: what happens to my healthcare when I leave New Jersey? It is a fair question. North Jersey residents are used to world-class hospitals within a short drive, and nobody wants a move to mean a downgrade in care. The good news is that Florida does not require the trade-off. Twenty-three Florida hospitals made the most recent U.S. News national rankings, and the state placed 29 hospitals on the Forbes Top 100 list released in December 2025, second only to California. The key is choosing an area anchored by one of the strong systems rather than assuming care quality is uniform across the state.
Here are the five Florida areas where migration momentum and hospital quality line up, drawn from the same 2025 U-Haul migration data behind my rundown of the top Florida areas New Jersey residents are moving to and the current hospital rankings. You can browse the destination side anytime on my Florida neighborhoods hub.
1. Why Is Jacksonville the Healthcare Capital of Florida?
Mayo Clinic's Florida campus in Jacksonville is ranked the No. 1 hospital in the state by U.S. News for 2025-2026, with national rankings in 10 adult specialties and top-in-Florida status in six of them. The 602-acre campus treats more than 175,000 patients a year across 50 specialty areas, and it earned five stars for overall performance, patient outcomes, and patient experience on the 2026 Forbes list. Beyond Mayo, Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville and UF Health Jacksonville also made the state rankings, which gives the metro rare depth. Jacksonville is Florida's largest city, and its housing costs sit below most major U.S. metros, so the healthcare quality does not come with a South Florida price tag.
2. What Makes Gainesville a Smart Pick for Care Access?
UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville is tied for the No. 2 ranking in Florida per U.S. News 2025-2026. As the University of Florida's academic medical center, it brings teaching-hospital depth: complex specialties, research programs, and specialist pipelines that community hospitals cannot match. The surprise is the price of entry. Gainesville's median home price came in under $245,000 per FinanceBuzz reporting from January 2026, which makes it one of the most affordable places in America to live near a top-tier academic medical center. For a New Jersey seller converting decades of equity, that combination is hard to beat anywhere in the country.
3. Why Does Orlando Belong on a Healthcare Shortlist?
AdventHealth Orlando is tied for No. 2 in Florida per U.S. News 2025-2026, nationally ranked in 11 adult specialties, and Orlando Health's Orlando Regional Medical Center also ranks in the state's top ten. That two-system depth serves a metro that is already one of the strongest migration magnets in the country. Two of the top five U-Haul growth cities of 2025, Kissimmee and Clermont, sit in the Orlando orbit, so movers choosing those areas are also choosing this hospital infrastructure. Orlando metro single-family medians ran approximately $370,000 to $410,000 in 2026 per market reporting, below the Florida coastal premium.
4. What Does Tampa Bay Offer Beyond the Waterfront?
Tampa General Hospital, the University of South Florida's teaching hospital, ranked No. 4 in Florida per U.S. News 2025-2026, and the bay area adds ranked depth with Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater and St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa. For movers, that means strong care on both sides of the bay rather than one anchor hospital with a long drive. St. Petersburg pairs that access with a walkable, waterfront urban core, at a median around $380,000 per Q1 2026 market data, a meaningful discount to comparable coastal cities further south.
5. Why Do Movers With Health Priorities Choose Sarasota?
Sarasota Memorial Health Care System is tied for No. 5 in Florida per U.S. News 2025-2026 and made the Newsweek national list at No. 132 in the country. Its Venice campus also earned five stars for value on the 2026 Forbes list. Sarasota pairs that care quality with Gulf Coast living: Siesta Key beaches, a genuine downtown arts district, and proximity to North Port, the No. 2 U-Haul growth city in America for 2025. Median prices around $430,000 per Q1 2026 data make it the premium pick on this list, and for many of my clients the healthcare-plus-lifestyle combination justifies it.
Honorable Mention: Weston and Cleveland Clinic Florida
Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston is tied for No. 7 in the state per U.S. News and ranked No. 48 in the nation on the 2025 Newsweek list, with national recognition for heart and vascular care. Weston sits in Broward County, inland from Fort Lauderdale, which means movers drawn to the Fort Lauderdale area from my top-five migration list get Cleveland Clinic access as part of the package.
How Does Healthcare Fit Into the Transition Plan?
Healthcare is one of the four questions I put on the table in every Transition Plan conversation, alongside taxes, timing, and destination. Getting it right means checking three things before you commit to an area: which hospital system anchors it, whether your specialists have counterparts there, and how your coverage travels across state lines. Those answers should shape where you buy, not follow it.
The New Jersey side of the plan is where the move gets funded. My home selling services for downsizers are built for owners leaving a long-held home, and if a previous listing attempt stalled out, my solutions for expired and cancelled listings rebuild the strategy before you go back to market. Start with what your home is worth today on my home valuation page, because the spread between a Bergen County sale price and a Gainesville or Jacksonville purchase price is what turns a healthcare-driven move into a financial upgrade at the same time.
I covered the money side of the decision in the real tax, property, and lifestyle math of a Bergen County to Florida move and the sequencing side in selling your Bergen County home and moving to Florida in 2026.

Q&A: Florida Healthcare and Your Move
What is the number one hospital in Florida? Mayo Clinic's campus in Jacksonville, ranked No. 1 in Florida in the U.S. News Best Hospitals 2025-2026 edition with national rankings in 10 adult specialties.
Which Florida cities have the best hospitals? Per U.S. News 2025-2026, the top-ranked hospitals sit in Jacksonville (Mayo Clinic), Gainesville (UF Health Shands), Orlando (AdventHealth Orlando), Tampa (Tampa General), and Sarasota (Sarasota Memorial), which is exactly the five-area list above.
Is healthcare in Florida as good as New Jersey? In the right areas, yes. Florida placed 23 hospitals on the most recent U.S. News national rankings and 29 on the Forbes Top 100 list from December 2025, second most of any state. Quality is not uniform statewide, which is why the anchor hospital system belongs in your area decision.
What is the most affordable Florida city with a top hospital? Gainesville. UF Health Shands is tied for No. 2 in the state, and the city's median home price came in under $245,000 per January 2026 reporting.
Does Scott Selleck factor healthcare into Florida relocation planning? Yes. The NJ to FL Transition Plan treats healthcare access as a core destination criterion alongside taxes, timing, and lifestyle, and coordinates the New Jersey sale with the Florida purchase as one strategy.

What Would a Move Built Around Your Health Look Like?
A Florida move should add to your quality of life on every line, and care access is one of the biggest lines there is. As the Dalai Lama writes in The Art of Happiness, "The purpose of our lives is to be happy."
