Celebrating Bergen County’s Rich History: My Proud Affiliation with the Bergen County Historical Society

As someone deeply rooted in our Northern New Jersey community, I’m proud to share that I am a member of the Bergen County Historical Society (BCHS) — an incredible organization dedicated to preserving, protecting, and promoting the history that shaped our region.

Founded in 1902, BCHS is a volunteer-driven nonprofit that has worked tirelessly to safeguard Bergen County’s heritage for more than a century. Their mission is powered entirely by members, donors, and community partners who believe in keeping local history alive for future generations.

Honoring Our Past, Building for the Future

This month marks an exciting milestone: groundbreaking for a new 3,750-square-foot History Museum at Historic New Bridge Landing — a project that will expand access to exhibits, educational programs, and cultural experiences across Bergen County.

Historic New Bridge Landing, located in River Edge, is a true local treasure. It’s home to the Steuben House, which once served as General George Washington’s headquarters during the Revolutionary War. The site stands as a powerful reminder of Bergen County’s critical role in America’s fight for independence.

The new museum will ensure that generations to come can experience the artifacts, stories, and spirit that make our county’s past so extraordinary.

Events That Bring History to Life

BCHS continues to host incredible community events — from living history reenactments and educational lectures to seasonal celebrations at Historic New Bridge Landing.

This October, visitors can experience:

  • A lecture by Francesca Costa on the history of the Closter Mountain community and its freedmen settlement.

  • The Fall Celebration at New Bridge Landing, featuring woodworking demos by Scott Lance.

  • The 249th Anniversary of the Retreat Across the Jerseys, a living history event honoring one of the most defining moments of the Revolutionary War.

Each program celebrates Bergen County’s heritage while engaging the community in hands-on, memorable ways.
